Geoff
was chief chauffeur on a tour around the western lakes today. We
headed out to Nyerimilang Park then Metung & Paynesville.
It
was a nice scenic & water dominated day.
Near
Paynesville are the 2nd longest Silt Jetties in the world.
Having never heard of, let alone seen a silt jetty we just had to go!
They were basically long thin spits out into Lake King; one we could
drive to the end of, the other was actually now an island.

So named for the "close shave" to get through the gap between the sand bars & land |

When in doubt about the correct term for a bit of land protruding out into water I have decided that it is now probably going to be called a spit. There are lots of other terms (point, peninsula, isthmus, tombolo, bar, sandbank), but really, do we use them all correctly? Plus I reckon that spit has that certain something that everyone just knows.
