Tuesday 3rd July

SHE SAID:

Elaine & Geoff, the house owners who we are sitting for, had texted us at 7.30am saying they were in Walcha about to have breakfast; only around 60km down the road from us. We had thought we might pass on the road, but they will be past us before we are ready to roll.

We left Uralla around 9.30am, with the 230km to Kew down the Oxley Highway ahead of us. It was a mainly sunny drive till the top of the range, when we drove into low mist. Luckily we didn't encounter much traffic on the windy, narrow roads.

Morning tea was rather late, but we stopped at the very pleasant Ellenborough Reserve for a leg stretch. It was a popular Free Camp with 8 or more vehicles parked up.

Our arrival at Kew was greeted by the “local nosy neighbour”, who thought it an ideal time to come over as we were trying to reverse the van into the driveway & off the road!

HE SAID:

Our drive from Uralla to Kew was uneventful. I took it really easy, as we were towing a van on very windy and hilly roads, that were wet, and misty, had wandering cattle, also roadworks. There was also a strange, small creature gnawing away at something on the roadside, but I couldn't quite identify it, and there was nowhere safe to stop and walk back for a look. It was about the size of a possum, but with very dark and bedraggled fur, and it didn't seem to care about us driving by so close. Maybe it was one of those mysterious mountain mongoose/quoll/bandicoot/possum/squirrel hybrids!
