Another drab, damp & cold day greeted us; a top of 8c today! It reminds me why I left Europe so long ago - this S*** weather!
We stopped at Milliesimo for a Roman watch tower over the river & some tasty local chocolates. Then we drove through the “supposedly” very scenic Piedmont winery region...if the misty rain had lifted I think it would have been lovely!
The town of Borolo, which makes “the king of wines” or the “wine for kings”, was a little disappointing; we found the tasting very expensive & the wine we tasted was rather plain. The wine museum in the old castle was different though.
I think the highlight for everyone was the truffle hunt with a local expert & his dog. Then we finished the day at the castle of Santa Vittoria D’Alba for dinner & the night. The meal was included in the tour, but again there was no choice, which wasn’t to some people’s liking.

Again the weather was crap. The castle had a vaguely interesting wine museum, but if I'd known what Varena paid to get I wouldn't have bothered. The cellar of the castle had a wine tasting room, which was overall rubbish. To taste any wine you need to hand over an ID card, which they keep, and they give you a plastic card loaded with 50 euro that you put into a dispenser machine, press your selection of wine, and pay what you've used at the end. The trouble is that you get a mere sip as a taste, and that sip can cost between 4 and 6 euro each. F-ing rip off! And, we thought the wine was weak and watery.
The truffle hunt was interesting, as we'd not seen it before. We had our suspicions that the truffle that was quickly found was planted there for our benefit, but the dog had other ideas. He barely took any notice of the truffle, then proceeded to go to the loo several times. I think he may want a day off. We were offered some truffle flavoured things after the truffle hunt, so I tried a few, but truffles are not for me. They taste like quirky dirt.
