SAID:
BIRDSVILLE
HERE WE COME!
Doing
the Birdsville Races has always been on our agenda, & now we are
on the final 180km stretch to get there.
I
kept a bit of a record of the trip: the road has about 118km of
bitumen & 62km of dirt. I thought it would be the other way
around. The dirt stretches were good, not many corrugations, but a
fair amount of dust. We had a cuppa break at the Old Carcory Homestead
ruins (once own by Sidney Kidman).
The
township of Birdsville is surrounded with fences & is accessed over
cattle grids; it was quite busy with plenty of utes, 4WD's, caravans &
camper trailers milling around.
We
found the camping area on the race track road; it's huge, with 100's
of people already camped out. Finding our patch of dirt, we set
ourselves up for the week, with the privacy wall & huge green
floor mat to help keep the dust down.
The
tour around town was brief, but the hotel, bakery & info centre
were all found.

With dust getting into the van from the very dusty track I was glad whenever we got back on to bitumen. We had no problems and set ourselves up for the week's stay.
