Monday 28th May

SHE SAID:

Another tick on the list again today. This time we headed for Dangar Gorge.

Unsurprisingly there was no water flowing over the cliffs, but also there was a complete lack of flowering orchids! I had hoped to see some here, but no luck. There were scatterings of Greenhood basal leaves, but nothing even budding.

Our destination was the oddly named McDirty's Lookout. It was a 7km return walk, with a cuppa when we got to the lookout. The most exciting part of the trip was when I thought that Geoff had walked into a low hanging tree branch! In fact he had jumped backwards because a large Carpet Python had reared up next to him about 1/2 m away! It stayed erect for quite sometime, we assume as a warning to us to back off. I got some good photos before it decided to leave.

HE SAID:

Well that was quite a surprise! As the weather had been so cool (several frosts already), and I had made assumptions about snakes taking it easy or hibernating in winter, I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw this 3m blighter reared up next to me! That will teach me to keep a better lookout for snakes all year round.
