We
are making our way across Cornwall to Wadebridge today, doing a few
“things” on the way. We headed to Bodmin & the Moors, had a
short walk around the town, then headed onto Camelford for a refuel of
diesel & food. We finally found Roughtor on the moors, though didn't climb
it, but didn't see the highest peak of Brown Willy though!
Geoff got a Jail Ale at Jamaica Inn, then did his “Laddie in the Lake” pose at Dozmary Lake (In the King Arthur legends, Excalibur was supposedly thrown back into this lake).
Lastly,
we got rather wet walking around the ruins of Tintagel (more King
Arthur).

Before our soggy day out I already knew of Tintagel, but not Jamaica Inn. Now I have to read the book, but will probably try to watch the movie about the inn. And apart from the weather at Tintagel, I was disappointed to read that there is absolutely no link between the legend of King Arthur and Tintagel, despite the fame. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote, 400 years after the supposed existence of Arthur, that he may have been born there. That is all people are going on.
A strange thing happened on our way to Wadebridge. We were driving along merrily in the pouring rain, when we saw ahead what looked to be a police check point, like a roadside Random Breath Test. The police were pulling most cars into the check point area, and we were directed in. The signs as we approached this check point read "Census". I had no idea what to expect, but was sober, so I was not worried about drink driving. It turned out to be an actual census. The police directed the cars in, the cencus takers asked us questions on our departure point and destination, and that was it. Apparently it was all about a possible road upgrade. This was a new one for me!
PS: The Jail Ale was good.
PPS: I now feel an urge to watch Monty Python's Holy Grail again. Moistened bints lobbing scimitars and all!
