SHE SAID:

I found out that the Morpeth Farmer's Markets were on today, so dragged Geoff to them before heading to Hadrian's Wall. Luckily for Geoff there were only about 12 stalls at the markets, selling mainly foods.

Housesteads Roman Fort, part of Hadrian's Wall, was our next destination. It is part of the National Trust, so apart from the £4 parking fee (EVERYWHERE we go it's paid parking...expensive business parking your car in England!), I thought we'd gain free entry to the fort, & Hadrian's Wall. But NO, there is a “special event” on this weekend so everyone has to pay to enter...Hmmmm.

It was good, though everyone has their hands out for your money here!

Hadrian's Wall was worth seeing, though I hadn't realised it is a fair way from the modern border with Scotland!

Hadrian's Wall heading off in the distance

Just a wee bit chilly on the wall is it Geoff....?

YES IT IS!

Another re-enactment with "Julius Caesar & the Briton King...Quite amusingly done,
in a Monthy Python-esque way!

HE SAID:

The historical places we go to are all very interesting. There are so, so many of them, but standing on a 1900 year old Roman wall and fort was pretty good.

After Housesteads we thought we'd head off and find a place to eat our picnic lunch. We started heading toward a couple of reservoirs that were clearly marked on the map as having roads leading to them. But alas for us, these so-called roads turned out to be a gradually declining standard of road/track/path/bush, with many farm gates that Varena had to open and close. She had to shoo away sheep at one gate, cattle at another. She trod in cow pats, and battled weeds and thorns. The car drove through so much dung that I reckon we could have scraped it off, bagged it and sold it. The last few hundred metres of following tyre tracks across a field to the last gate was a relief. There were road signs along the way. Just not much road!

We ended up parking off a proper road and watching a farmer drive sheep into field while we had our picnic lunch - at 3pm!
