It
was a 160 mile round trip to Castle Howard & York today. I had
always wanted to see Castle Howard, since the 1980's TV series
“Brideshead Revisited”.
It
is yet another huge, grand totally OTT “pile” that the UK does so
well!
We
also squeezed in a couple of hours wandering around the lovely old
city of York. You can still walk around the city walls, also check out the
medieval Shambles, gawk at York Minister & see what remains of
the old castle.

This impressive drive is the road that passes the entrance to Castle Howard! I assume that it is on the estate but is now a public road.

The front...surprisingly not symmetrical

The ladies drawing room

The ceiling in the very grand entrance

An equally impressive ceiling in the chapel!

The medieval street called the Shambles actually meant slaughthouse many years ago.

HE SAID:
Castle Howard is a ridiculously expensive grand house that someone with way too much money thought was a good idea. Varena's desire to go there, based on seeing it Brideshead Revisited was a fair enough reason to go. It is just that I watched the remade movie and didn't like it. But I went anyway.
York was interesting. There is a fair bit to see, but as we were not there long we just had a quick look around. It will have to be on our list for next time.
