SHE SAID:

After breakfast Geoff & I did one of the walks around the resort;.The Bluff walk was about 2.5km, up to the lookout over the resort, & then back through the savannah scrub.

After that we joined a 2 hour tour out to the lava tubes. We got to see 3 different lava tubes, though one was now an archway, as it had collapsed. It was an interesting tour, with loads of information on their formation, age, numbers etc.

For the second sunset we climbed the Kalkani Volcanic Crater, which is about 15km from Undara. We had a bottle of red & nibbles with us to mark the setting of the sun! Our final night we splashed out with dinner at the Fettler's Iron Pot Restaurant, the resort restaurant.

At the Bluff Lookout with views across the resort to the savannah plains &
volcanic country beyond

First Lava Tube with information board

Looking down into the lava tube (a tree root has made it's
way from the surface!)

Granny Cloaking Moths: when the bats come out the moths beat their wings
very fast & the bats can't see them! (It's their cloaking device!)

In the tube

Tiny micro-bats clinging to the roof of the tubes

Ex-Lava Tube, now an Archway

The third tube that we visited - Ewamian Tube
named for the local Aboriginals of the area

The beautiful colours in the rocks of the Lava Tubes

The rim pathway around the crater.
The volcano is apparently dormant...it didn't start rumbling whilst we were there!

Sunset No. 2

Waiting for dinner in the non-moving railway carriage circa 1930
HE SAID:

A full day today. Our self-guided Bluff walk was not very interesting, but the lava tubes tour was informative. Sunset on the rim of a volcanic crater, with wine and nibbles, was fun. Other people out walking the crater were a little jealous I think.
