Friday 16th March

SHE SAID:

We had a long circuitous route today, taking in Heidelberg, the Tradouw Pass, Barrydale, Montagu, Swellendam, and Cape Agulhas, before eventually getting to Hermanus.

I had read that it was very scenic up the Tradouw Pass route and we had plenty of time to kill. We had Baboons on the first bend in the road, and several stops for views. Then of course we had to go to the most southerly point on the African continent: Cape Agulhas.

Our arrival into Hermanus was at the exact same time as Tina and Ramzie arrived from Cape Town. We hadn't seen each other for almost 30 years, but it didn't seem like it. The evening just flew by.

Leaving Stiil Bay
A Blue Crane - South Africas bird emblem (They are endangered now)
but we saw 3 on the roadside as we left Sill Bay

More elegant Dutch Reform churches, as we pass through the little dorps (towns)

Giving way to on coming traffic was the only option!

These Baboons were all across the road as we approached, luckily not at speed
on a hairpin bend

As you see not interested in us at all...

Scenery heading up the pass

Once we came out of the pass we headed west towards Montagu, through some lovely
Scenery,  with lots of wineries along way

Coming into Montagu
Many old Cape Dutch style housing in Montagh

The road widening works on the pass held us up for while. We were told later that the road
will be 4 lanes apart from this little secton which historic and won't be altered...
I'm guessing that the congestion will continue then?

Heading for Swellendam

More lovely looking churches here too
I came to most sothern point in Africa about 30 but don't remember
much signage let alone a town & houses!

Where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet

Archie "2" oceans

Geoff too

Back on the road towards Hermanus

The final leg of our 700km+ scenic day
HE SAID:

I enjoyed the scenic drive, though Varena was a bit surprised when our route took us past farms on a dirt road, with several items of large farm machinery being towed along and taking up most of the road.

Tina and Ramzie are a friendly and outgoing pair. I have to listen extra carefully though, as I struggled sometimes with their strong accents. But I guess they may not be used to mine either.
