Sunday 8th April / Monday 9th April

SHE SAID:

Our final day in South Africa dawns.

We met Nina at La Vie En Rose restaurant in the Killarney Country Club for lunch. We spent a lovely couple of hours there, then caught an Uber to the airport.

Our flight was delayed by an hour, but we had no dramas. The journey back was just over 11 hours compared with 14 1/2 going there.

We went to Kath's place in Double Bay, where we chatted the rest of the afternoon and night away. So that entry covers the 8th and 9th April, as we flew through the night.

Hector Pieterson was a 13 year school boy killed by police, when & his school protested about
the mandatory teaching of Afriaakans. The government tried to hush this up, but a photo of the dead boy
being carried away by a school mate got out of the country. This was the catalyst for the world wide sanctions
imposed on South Africa.

HE SAID:

Lunch with Varena's "aunt" was nice, and at a nice place. The long, cramped flight back to Sydney was not nice, but not horrible either. It could have been bad, as we were regularly overlooked for things, such as menus, meals, drinks, but as I am not a shrinking violet we managed to get some sustenance. The crew claimed innocence each time. As long term Qantas frequent flyer members we should be used to their habits of trying to not seat us together, not allocating us our preferred seats etc, but we are not. It is still a surprise each time!
