Friday 17th August

SHE SAID:

Geoff & I did some sightseeing & bush wanderings today. I had a list of places to check out; the weather was sunny, though coolish, and our jackets remained on all day. We had orchid success at Davis Creek & Shipwreck Creek, & lots more lovely empty beaches were seen.

Geoff looked up Mallacoota yesterday, trying to find out the meaning of the word, with little success. But he did find out that the town is normally about 1,000 people for most of the year. But come summer & Easter it swells to 9,000.... I think it would be horrendous here then. It is a lovely sleepy beach/fishing village now!

After lunch Geoff had a quiet afternoon whilst I went out solo. I found a further 3 orchids, 2 we have seen here before, & one new one for the area. So with 5 different orchids found in the last 2 days I'm quite happy. They are all winter bloomers, with only a couple of signs of the spring orchids to come.

Blooming Grevillea

Stately Helmet Orchid
(Corybas diemenicus)

Blunt Greenhood
(Pterostylis curta)

Batka River

HE SAID:

Our previous visits to Lakes Entrance have included a dinner at The Waterwheel Tavern at Lake Tyers, just up the road. The first visit was remarkably memorable because of the fantastic BBQ Pork Ribs that they served there. The second visit was equally memorable because of the disaster that they now served, in which the ribs were not smoked or seasoned, and just splashed with a tiny amount of an orange-flavoured Asian sauce. I was so disappointed!

Before risking another visit to The Waterwheel I checked their menu online, say that they served ribs, and emailed them to check which version of the ribs I could expect. I was given a reply that they have not updated their online menu and that ribs were no longer available. The menu I had seen online was from 2016!

Anyway, after a little to and fro via email both parties agreed that it was for the best that the menu-changing, rib-disaster-making person was no longer in the catering industry!
